Our Formulas are Simple to Understand
As a well-experienced prescribing physician, we are sure that you are very familiar with all the oral NSAIDs such as Aleve and Motrin that are used orally to treat pain. What we have simply done at BioMed is take the same ingredients that are used orally and put them in a highly effective base that allows for absorption.
We believe that most pain conditions should be treated topically to minimize exposure to the whole body from the active ingredient, therefore, allowing for greater pain relief with very minimal systemic absorption. For example, a patient could be taking diclofenac 75 mg 2x per day, Neurontin 800 mg 2-4 times per day, and Lidoderm patches to treat an inflammatory or neuropathic pain condition. An alternate treatment to that would be a formula with the following ingredients: Diclofenac, Gabapentin, Lidocaine, and Prilocaine. The patient can apply 1-2 grams topically 4 times a day. Within a week or two of appropriate usage, the patient will more than likely find better pain relief, higher compliance, and less likely to either complain of continuous pain or seek another pain pill.

Quality Assurance:
BioMed is a Pharmacy Compounding Accreditation Board (PCAB) Accredited Pharmacy, a service of the Accreditation Commission for Health Care (ACHC).
Over the last decade, compounding has benefited greatly from advances in technology, quality control, & research methodology. The Food & Drug administration has stated that compounded medications are both ethical & legal as long as they are prescribed by a licensed practitioner for a specific patient and compounded by a licensed pharmacy. Furthermore, compounding is regulated by state boards of pharmacy.
Pharmaceutical compounding involves additional accredited training or fellowship, just as subspecialties or certifications in medicine require additional training. Our compounding pharmacists adhere to strict compounding regulations, and use base medications meeting United State Pharmacopeia and National Formulary (USP-NF) pharmaceutical quality standards.
At BioMed, quality is of the utmost importance to our process. We take all necessary precautions to offer maximum protection for both the prescriber and the patient:
- Formulas are thoroughly read and discussed prior to compounding.
- Calculations are double-checked when preparing a formula.
- The finished compound is labeled immediately in order to confirm the identity of the compound prior to dispensing.
- Compounds are worked on one at a time to avoid confusion and possible mislabeling of a product.
- All chemicals used in a formula are multi-checked throughout the compounding process. They are logged into inventory and logged for accuracy during compounding.
- An electronic balance is used to confirm proper weighing of chemicals.
- A workstation hood is used to provide maximum protection when compounding. These countertop hoods are designed for manipulating potent powders such as hormones, for mortar and pestle compounding, and for encapsulating powders.
- Consistency is maintained by adding helpful notes to formulas to assist the pharmacist and his/her staff in the future.
- Customized log forms are created for compounded products. Clear identification of final products (lot # and expiration date) and patients who received them is important in the case of a recall or complaint.
- A training program regarding hazard codes and recommended safety equipment for handling bulk chemicals is established.
- Procedures for cleaning chemical spills are well-known by all members of the pharmacy team.
- Proper safety clothing, including masks, gloves, lab coats and hair bonnets, are worn when compounding.
