BioMed - Intro to Topicals

Managing pain can be especially challenging, as what works for one may not work or be convenient for all. Doctors and pharmacists are challenged to find unique treatments to suit each individual’s needs.

Healthcare providers and patients have realized the many drawbacks and health risks associated with the commonly-prescribed oral pain medications. This one-size-fits-all approach of mass produced medication can cause complications in care, including side effects and limited dosage forms and strengths available. There’s a better way.

What is Compounding?

Pharmacy compounding is the art and science of preparing customized medications for patients. Its practice dates back to the origins of pharmacy, although compounding’s presence in the pharmacy profession has changed over the years. In the 1930s and 1940s, the majority of prescriptions were compounded. With the advent of mass drug manufacturing in the 1950s and 1960s, compounding declined as the pharmacist’s role as a preparer of medications quickly changed to that of a dispenser of manufactured dosage forms. However, this “one-size-fits-all” approach to medication meant that some patients’ needs were not being met.

Within the last few decades, however, compounding has experienced a renaissance as modern technology and innovative techniques have become available. Research has allowed more pharmacists to customize medications to meet a patient’s unique needs. Here at BioMed, our most commonly prescribed drug delivery method is topical cream or gel-based medication (called “topical” medication, as it is applied directly to the body’s surface), allowing the patient to apply the medication directly to the site of pain.

Why Compounded Topical Medications? (Creams, Gels, Lotions, etc.)

Since oral medications are ingested and carried through the bloodstream, they flow through all areas of the body. This can result in unpleasant side effects such as constipation, upset stomach, dizziness, or drowsiness, at the risk of treating your isolated painful area.

Our topical pain creams are applied directly to the source of your pain, providing fast, effective pain relief with fewer side effects. Our compounded formulations work their way through the skin to deliver pain-relieving medicine directly to the area of pain with minimal absorption into the bloodstream.

Customized to Treat YOU

Each formulation we prepare targets the unique characteristics of pain for a specific diagnosis, which results in increased patient satisfaction. Pharmacists and healthcare professionals work together to choose specific active ingredients based on both the type of pain receptors involved, as well as the area of the body where the pain originates from. BioMed’s highly skilled team of compounding pharmacists have researched and developed customized topical creams that are formulated to specifically target different types of pain and inflammation. Each personalized formulation is formulated specifically for you and your specific need. With us you are a special person with unique needs looking for answers.

With a physician’s consent, a compounding pharmacist can:

  • Remove or add certain ingredients
  • Adjust the dose (strength or amount) of a medication
  • Avoid unwanted ingredients, such as dyes, preservatives, lactose, gluten, or sugar
  • Prepare medications using unique delivery systems. For patients who find it difficult to swallow a capsule, a compounding pharmacist may prepare topical gels or creams, suppositories, sublingual troches or even lollipops.
